Project| Overview
LUMEIK-5G aims at developing services to help improve the efficiency and flexibility of manufacturing and automotive industry. The use of mmWave frequencies has not been extensively explored in the context of manufacturing and automotive industrial scenarios. Localization and situational awareness services still need to be realized to support automation in manufacturing industry through multi-robot collaborations and in the automotive industry to provide safety and more controlled traffic and driving environment for road users in tunnels. LUMEIK-5G considers use cases where localization services for safe and autonomous interactions are needed. Moreover, fast, and reliable exchange of sensor data within a robot fleet or robot vehicles can increase the overall performance, resilience, and safety of the physical systems (left figure). Currently, a variety of technologies (Lidar, optical camera, GNSS, etc.) are used for localization and navigation, however, a coherent approach through situational awareness, real-time communication, use of AI, and edge computing need further investigation, specifically in GNSS-denied environments (right figure).

Project| Objectives
A central goal of LUMEIK-5G is the technical advancement of 5G localization in the mmWave or UWB range in the LIT factory to explore and test specific localization use cases. The road to the goal is divided into multiple objectives:
- Deploy, configure and evaluate of mmWave frequency band for automotive and manufacturing industrial applications with vendors, service providers, integrators, and end users.
- Develop a scalable infrastructure for growing automotive and manufacturing industrial application requirements and future 5G use cases.
- Research and develop techniques to integrate mmWave and sub-6GHz frequencies together with UWB technology for improved localization.
- Integration of 5G technology into robotic platforms for localization, communication and collaboration between robots through edge computing and real-time data processing.
- Enhanced environmental perception and situational awareness using AI support by leveraging continuous external camera system feeds for real-time monitoring.
- Showcase robot collaboration for manufacturing and automotive industry using FR1 and FR2 frequencies and research and developments carried out on localization.
Project| Work plan
WP1
The objectives of this work package are to ensure an appropriate level of coordination and co-operation between the members of the consortium and to ensure successful implementation of the project through effective management and coordination at technical, financial and administrative level as well as risk and quality management of the project while achieving the project objectives.
WP2
The aim of this work package is to define the requirements for 5G services from the perspective of production and automotive applications. At least three industrial applications will be considered as a case study to define their requirements and the corresponding services needed from a 5G communication perspective. These requirements will be mapped to the 5G architecture based on the current 3GPP Release 18 specifications and the latest commercially available 5G implementations. In addition, the definition of new services will be analysed.
WP3
The aim of this work package is to explore the mmWave possibilities in an indoor environment and the integrated use of sub-6GHz together with mmWave frequencies. Currently, a 5G campus network testbed is deployed in the LIT factory using sub-6GHz. The testbed will be extended with the mmWave frequency band and performance analyses will be conducted to investigate the scalability and utilisation of the 5G network with the growing demands of automotive and manufacturing applications that require higher capacity, low latency communication or positioning.
WP4
The objectives of this work package are to investigate localisation techniques for better precision and availability using a combination of mmWave, sub-6GHz and ultra-wideband. Additionally, we are investigating how localisation and situational awareness can be used as a service for robot navigation in a factory environment and vehicle safety in tunnels.
WP5
The objectives of this work package are to validate the use of current commercially available 5G technology for production and automotive applications and the developments for localisation and situational awareness carried out as part of the project as a laboratory proof-of-concept. In addition, an evaluation of the system will be carried out based on the service requirements and definitions carried out in WP2. Furthermore, the demonstration of the integrated use of FR1 and FR2 will take centre stage.
WP6
The aim of this work package is to ensure that the project results are properly disseminated and made available to the public, academia and the research community in a traditional way. Project results will be disseminated and publicised at relevant events and platforms such as journals, conferences, workshops (academic and industrial), etc. In addition, the objectives of making industry-relevant know-how available, facilitating knowledge exchange between the partners, increasing the visibility of the project and the partner institutes and creating opportunities for future collaborations are of particular importance.
